Perito Moreno Glacier and Our Little Friend

It was a little tough seeing the mountains in the rear view mirror the next day. It was such an awesome place, but we knew we were in for another treat so on we went. We headed in a round about way to the south through the wide open pampas. There were hundreds more guanacos hanging around and also many nandos.

Traffic jam

Nandos aka rhea

After a couple hours, we were in El Calafate. We grabbed some groceries and walked around in many of the outdoor stores. We continued on towards the huge attraction (the Perito Moreno Glacier) of the area to find a camp spot.
During the night, I heard some rustling and I thought it might be inside the vehicle, but I wasn't sure. I figured I wouldn't let Roberta know until I knew for sure. That confirmation came pretty quickly the next morning when Roberta found chew marks on my phone case. I fessed up and we emptied the vehicle of all of our stuff to see if it had gotten into anything. We found traces of it in the glove box and under a seat, but no where else. We then headed back to town to grab a couple traps and some poison.
After all of this we headed to the glacier which we had intended to do much earlier.

We set the traps and put out the poison while we went to observe the glacier. It was a pretty steep price for foreigners to get into the park, but it was amazing. It is one of the few glaciers that is considered stable and not shrinking.

First view of the glacier.

Fox in the parking lot.

The face of it has been in the same place since the early 1900s. It does move around 6 feet per day which leads to a lot of calving episodes.

Sometimes what looked like a small piece of ice coming off made the largest crack and splash because it was actually the size of a car! Being that the glacier is 5 kms wide, around 30 kms in length, and with a face of 40-70 meters high, a piece the size of a car doesn't look that big.

We saw some larger calving episodes, but nothing huge. It was a pretty amazing place.

The next day we headed back into Chile to get ready to hike in Torres Del Paine. We decided to wait a couple days as there was rain in the forecast and chill out in a hostel. That is where we are now. At least it allowed us to get caught up on our blog.
Oh and I almost forgot, we caught the culprit!
